SUMMER IS COMING
By Ralph O Cuomo
The summer is coming so don’t despair
Soon the chill of winters cold air
Will soon cease to be
So look around and you may see
The crocus coming thru
They seem to tell you summer is due
And soon the warm breeze fill the air
As blossoms start to bloom so fair
And so the chill of winter will be
Just a chilly memory
A SUMMER MORN
By
Ralph Cuomo
A summer morn with air so cool
The yellow sun with golden hue
The flower wake in morning mist
To lift their blossoms in a sun drenched kiss
The meadows seem to come alive
With creatures teaming to survive
Amidst the fields so lush and green
A meadow warmed by summers gleam
The birds and animals seem to thrive
Like the honey bees that fly
From blossom to blossom to have their drink
For only in summers of days gone by
We seem to ponder the reasons why
Of natures wonderful reply
To lead these creatures to survive
So not to be forlorn
Is why she brings this glorious summer morn

From The Desk of Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro -
Dear Friends,
I have received numerous calls from citizens who are concerned with the current delays in the processing of passport applications. I am writing to you today to provide you with important information about what has caused these delays. On December 7, 2004, Congress passed into law the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 at the recommendation of the 9/11 Commission. The passing of this law requires that citizens of the United States, Canada, Mexico and Bermuda present a valid passport when entering the United States. The new travel document requirements will be implemented in two phases.
As of January 23, 2007 the Department of State and Homeland Security (DHS) requires that "all persons, including United States citizens, traveling by air between the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration (form I-551)" in order to enter or re-enter the United States.
New passport requirements for travel by land or sea (including ferries) may be implemented as early as January 1, 2008. All persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda, may be required to present a valid passport or other documents. Although the DHS does not require you to show a valid passport if traveling by land or sea, several cruise lines have policies requiring passports. If you are traveling by sea please contact your cruise line and ask about their traveling requirements.
You should know that any U.S. citizen traveling to or returning directly from a U.S. territory (i.e. Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Swains Island and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands) is NOT required to present a valid passport as you are not considered to have left the United States.
The National Passport Agency has received nearly 2 million passport applications and approximately 600,000 applications have not yet been entered into the National Passport Agency's database. The National Passport Agency is working weekends, holidays and mandatory overtime to get these applications processed.
As of March 5, 2007, the Connecticut Passport Office has received 22,500 applications; however, they are currently processing applications received on January 31st, February 2nd and 3rd.
You should be aware that the current processing time for routine passport applications is now estimated to be between 8 to 12 weeks. Expedited applications are being processed in 4 to 5 weeks. If you applied for a passport and have not received it 2 weeks prior to your travel date, please call the National Passport Center at 1-877-487-2778, press option 3 and ask to speak with a Customer Service Representative. The National Passport Center is open Monday through Friday 7 am to Midnight.
Additionally, please feel free to contact my office in New Haven, Connecticut at (203) 562-3718 with any passport problems or questions you may have. As always, please feel free to forward this message to friends and family who care about this issue.
