Where as moms we can get together to socialize and incorporate time to regenerate us as well as the kids. Although we will have playgroups, activities and outings for children. I hope to initiate things like Mom’s Night Out, Babysitting Co-Ops, Family Days, Crafts Clubs or anything else that our other mom’s might like. Exchange Students Coming to Connecticut for Summer Stay
High school students from France will discover New England and the US during a one-month stay in July. Families in Connecticut are invited to apply to host these students during their visit to America. The exchange experience is organized by Terra Lingua USA, a non-profit State-Department approved organization which provides inbound and outbound homestay experiences for high school students throughout the United States.
Students will arrive in early July and will stay with American host families for the month. They will join their host family in activities, excursions, and family gatherings, for the purpose of mastering their English skills as well as learning about American life and culture. Each student must have at least three years of English language training to qualify for the program. Students come with their own spending money and a willingness to immerse themselves in their host family’s life.
A special treat for these students will be a one-day trip to New York City which will feature a tour of the Statue of Liberty, the United Nations, and Ground Zero. Host families will have the opportunity to join the students for the trip to New York for a nominal cost.
Terra Lingua USA also seeks host families for the 2007-2008 academic year. Students arrive in August and are coming from many countries, including France, Germany, Japan, Mongolia, Nepal, Kosovo, Albania, Kyrgyzstan, Korea, Brazil, Vietnam and Ghana.
They would attend the local high school where they are required to meet specific grade requirements. Host families receive a small stipend to assist in covering school lunches.
Families interested in hosting a student (or their adult chaperone) are asked to contact Kellie Iacovella for more information. Families must complete an application process, which includes a criminal background check, application and references, and a family interview. Families who host an exchange student do so as volunteers.

The Middlesex Hospital Vocal Chords
132 Pepperidge Road
Portland, Connecticut 06480
The Middlesex Hospital Vocal Chords is a group that was founded by Joyce Ghent, RN, who worked at the hospital for over 45 years and discovered that music had a soothing effect on patients. Starting with a small group of nurses and hospital employees, the mission was to relieve stress, lift spirits and heat souls with music. Today, it has grown to 80 male and female singers from all walks of life and seven orchestra members who live throughout central and southern CT.
We held our 18th Annual spring Concert on Friday, June 1st to a sold out crowd. This was our best concert yet as it was a tribute to Disney, Broadway, MGM and to the USA. A special visual presentation was made on Ellis Island and the Portland Volunteer Fire Department, Honor Guard and members of the Armed Forces took part in an uplifting second half. After the concert, the comments in the audience were that “they were proud to be Americans”.
One of the recipients of this year’s six $1000 grants was MICHAEL VERSELLI OF Wallingford. Michael is a graduating senior at Xavier High School in Middletown and plans to continue his education at the University of Connecticut as a Music Education major. He has an outstanding academic record having earned places in the National Honor Society, the Latin national Honor Society and the Xavier Leadership Institute. His participation in school activities includes Jazz Band, Pep Band, cantor at student masses, Basketball and Track. He has earned many music awards in choral and jazz events and is part of a garage band that has released 4 CD’s. In addition, Michael has volunteered as a Youth Basketball Coach, a camp counselor and is active in his church youth group. His goal is “to bring my future students an education that goes beyond just learning how to plunk out, finger or sing notes, but teaches them to enjoy and appreciate the music they play or sing.”
Anyone wishing to join this special musical group (no auditions necessary) or for more information please call 860-342-3120.

Members have supported the national “Amber Alert” Program by conducting registrations at various locations
Finally, Wallingford Rotarian’s take pride in their annual visits to the Dominican Republic where we have “adopted a community, helped built medical facilities, and secured an “ambulance.” Rotarians take the motto “SERVICE ABOVE SELF “very seriously world-wide. From wherever in this region you come from, August 1, 2007 is an evening of barbecue chicken, fresh sweet corn, and the fixings followed by an auction of astounding articles and value. Join us
LOCAL ROTARIANS, initiated a new community service at the 2004 BBQ, and will present it again at this years annual family barbecue on August 1, 2007 . With the help of Wallingford Rotarians, all children in attendance have an opportunity to be enrolled in the AMBER ALERT Program. The program is free, and has been successful in Wallingford and other towns served by Rotary in our area.
In 2003, ROTARY CLUBS in District 7980 formed a voluntary partnership with the Connecticut Department of Public Safety- Division of State Police, the Connecticut Chiefs of Police Association, the University Of New Haven Henry C. Lee Institute Of Forensic Sciences, and the general public to combat child abduction by sending immediate up-to-date descriptive information to aid in a child’s recovery. It is a partnership for Kids.
The U.S. Department of Justice reports 74% of children abducted and later found murdered were killed with 3 hours of being taken. Rapid response is vital. One child in the United States is abducted every four minutes and 30 seconds.
In May 2003, President Bush signed into law a national Amber Alert program. Since the Connecticut Rotarians have made it a priority. It is a comprehensive national registry of Child ID that could save a life.\Every child 18 or under should enroll. AMBER ALERT ID is a safety program that seriously increases the probability of recovering an abducted child.
The AMBER ALERT Child ID contains minimal yet essential information needed to find a child in the event the child is abducted. The ID information contains a laminated wallet size card, a picture of the child and unique AMBER ALERT ID number. This information is stored in a secured data base at the Connecticut Department of Safety Communications Center.
If anyone witnesses child abduction they should 911. As a result an Amber Alert Watch is begun with the child’s data sent through the Amber Alert system nationwide.
AMBERT ALERT REGISTRATION
AMBER ALERT is provided as a free public service by BigHits.com, Inc. with contributions provided by companies and individuals. At the local level, Rotary Clubs and other community service groups provide staff and signup events for the Child ID’s program. Again it is a free protective service.
The AMBER ALERT project is also a success because of the special support of the international Web community. When a child is reported missing, ID data is broadcast to this network to aid in bringing home abducted children.
Southington Genealogical Society
The Southington Genealogical Society will conduct its next business meeting on Tuesday, July 24th at 7:30pm in the Old Milldale Firehouse. Members are invited to present summaries of their ongoing research. The general public is invited to bring their questions, researching difficulties, and curiosity. Our summer meetings are a time when we like to reach out to the local community and to all those who have thought of pursuing this fascinating hobby, but had no idea how to get started. We also welcome the challenging questions of those who have tried to research their family history, but have run into problems and given up. To all of you who fall into either category (or even somewhere in-between) we say there is hope! Come to our July meeting and find out why being part of a genealogical community can make the difference. As always no strings are attached, no reservations are required, and the meeting is free of charge.

The society regularly meets at 7:30 pm on the fourth Tuesday of every month, except December, at the Old Milldale Firehouse, 91 Norton Street, Plantsville, Connecticut.
