Rethink giving loved ones the silent treatment.
Are you still not talking to a family member or friend? Do you even remember why? Thank your lucky stars that you still have them. Consider the terrible tragedy that happened to the Petit family in Cheshire.
Anyone can be taken from you in the blink of an eye. Life is so fragile and most people take so much for granted. I hope from this tragedy we will learn to love each other and overlook others’ faults.
In this country, we are very lax in letting offenders out of prison much too early. We don’t seem to learn from our mistakes and that costs the lives of many innocent people.

New Beginning At Curves Of Meriden
Cathy Chagnon, owner of over 7 years has sold her Curves For Women business at 477 South Broad StreetMeriden, (Blockbuster Video Plaza).
"I will miss the people in Meriden and Staff. This was my first Curves Club of four, that I opened inApril of 2000. Some of the original members are still working out today. I would love to thank all thethousands of women that I have met and worked with over the years. This is a time of sadness and greathope for me. I am sad that I will not be involved in the Meriden Community and with my amazing members. Iam hopeful that the new owners will bring new life into the club and be a full time presence in the club.
The clients need a full time leader to be there with support and guidance and I am full time in my Hamdenclub and have not been there for the Meriden members as I should be. I want to wish Laura and Kathy a hugesuccess and will always be there for them to support and help along their new journey."

Department of Consumer Protection Issues Consumer Alert Over Ground Beef Recall
884 Pounds Possibly Contaminated with E. Coli
The Department of Consumer Protection is alerting consumers that Fairbank Farms of Ashville, N.Y. has voluntarily recalled approximately 884 pounds of ground beef products because they may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.
“I’m asking people to look at any ground beef packages they have recently bought at Shaw’s Supermarkets, just to be sure they aren’t marked with the following information,” Consumer Protection Commissioner Jerry Farrell said. “Indications are that nearly 100% of the product has been accounted for and taken off store shelves, but if you’ve recently bought ground beef at Shaw’s, by all means, check the package to be sure it’s not one of the recalled items, which could cause serious illness.”
The ground beef products were produced on Aug. 31, 2007, and were distributed to Shaw’s stores in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.
The recalled ground beef product is packed in 1.33-pound trays labeled “SHAW’S FRESH GROUND ROUND BEEF PATTIES, 85/15.” The USDA inspection seal includes the marking, Est. 492, and the “Nutrition Facts” label is time-stamped between 17:05 and 17:25 and includes a date code of 243.
This recalled product should not be eaten, but returned to the Shaw’s store for an immediate refund, Farrell said.
E. coli is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea and dehydration. The very young, seniors and persons with compromised immune systems are the most susceptible to foodborne illness.
Questions about the recall may be directed to the company’s Public Relations Representative, Agnes Schafer, at (816) 716-3543 or toll-free at 1-800-724-1136. Consumers with food safety questions can “Ask Karen,” the FSIS virtual representative available 24 hours a day at AskKaren.gov. The toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline (1-888-674-6854) is available in English and Spanish and can be reached from l0 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Recorded food safety messages are available 24 hours a day.
The Department of Consumer Protection lists recall information on its website, www.ct.gov/dcp.
IT’S TIME TO JOIN A SKI CLUB
Ever think of joining a ski club? It’s a chance to meet new people, have folks to ski with, be a member of an organization that has great buying power, become a better skier and best of all save a bundle on your skiing costs.
The Meriden Ski Club offers this and a lot more to skiers and boarders in the area.
The Meriden Ski Club has been going strong for the last 46 years. It organizes ski trips, for a day, weekend or week. We go to areas in New England, western U.S., Canada and Europe. You just have to become a member to partake in these trips. We offer 6 to 8 day bus trips, Weekend trips to areas in Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire or New York. This year our week trips will be going to Breckinridge Colorado and Andorra, Spain. All you have to do, as a member is sign-up and pay. The ski club does everything else.
We offer skiing and snowboard lessons to our members and their children. The club has on hand ASIA trained ski instructors who meet weekly with those who wish to improve their skiing.
The club also has a group of members who are involved in ski racing. They are always looking for members to join them on the Meriden Race Team and participate in club racing, sponsored by the Connecticut Ski Council. They race Monday nights at Southington Ski area. Our team has finished near the top, the last few years and we are looking for new members to come and race with us.
The club also has several social events during the year. We hold golf tournaments; have a summer picnic, Christmas party and a dinner dance to close out the year. We also have monthly member’s nights where refreshments are served and the members have a chance to mingle.
With the cost of skiing rising over the past several years the Meriden Ski Club, through the Connecticut Ski Council, had developed ways to save an enormous amount, 20% to 40% on the cost of lift tickets alone. We offer these savings for over 100 different skiing days at various areas.
Our Sat./Sun. bus trips save on ticket costs and transportation. We offer a typical Sunday trip to Okemo for $ 40. If you drove your car up and brought a ticket at Okemo it would cost over $100. Several area ski shops offer our members substational savings on equipment.
On October 25, 2007 at 7:00 we will be holding an open house at the A.O.H. hall, 71 Melville Ave., South Meriden. It’s a good time to drop in and see what the Meriden Ski Club can offer you. We will have door prizes and refreshments. Representatives from several New England ski areas will be present, ski shops will have displays and a ski tuning demonstration will take place.
We look forward to meeting old and new members on this night so stop by and say “Hi”.

It’s Cub Scout Time.
Cub Scout Packs in Southington, Wallingford, Meriden, North Haven and Hamden invite boys in first through fifth grade and their parents to become a part of one of America's leading values-driven organizations. These Cub Scout Packs in the Sleeping Giant District will be holding a recruiting night at their respective schools on Tuesday, September 11th or later in the month. Flyers with school-specific details will be sent home with students.
The Cub Scout program is a valuable resource that can help families accomplish worthy goals while building and strengthening relationships within the family.
Cub Scouting combines fun with educational activities and lifelong values. It also helps parents to help their boys strengthen character, develop good citizenship, and enhance both mental and physical fitness. In addition, the program provides boys with positive peer groups and tools to shape their future.
In Cub Scouting, boys learn ideals like honesty, bravery, and respect. These values help boys make constructive decisions throughout their lifetimes and give them the confidence they need to grow and develop.
According to a recent study conducted by Louis Harris & Associates, "Character may be defined as the 'willingness to do what is right, regardless of circumstances.' Cub Scouting teaches boys what is right, in part by encouraging them to reflect on lessons learned through Cub Scouting activities."
For more information on Cub Scouting, please visit http://www.joincubscouting.org/ or call the Connecticut Yankee Council, Boy Scouts of America at 1.800.333.7905.
Congratulations Graduates
The following Explorers have successfully passed the training and requirements to become Connecticut state certified Medical Response Technicians MRT’s In Connecticut you must be at least 14 years of age with parental permission to begin your training. These teenagers all worked through months of training and completed their state written test and their state practical exam to be honored with this new title.
Most Police Departments and Fire departments within the state require the adult recruits become a minimum of a MRT when employed by these agencies. As you may not know that 80% of Connecticut is made up of Volunteer EMS organizations and that there must be at least one EMT and one MRT manning that ambulance to respond to it’s citizens. There actually is a volunteer ambulance corp. manned by high school students in Fairfield County. Do not ever under estimate the positive determination of teenagers. A huge thank you to Mr. Lowell and Mr. McGovern State EMS – Instructors that volunteered those months to see these kids thru.

The High Holidays - Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur
by Joan Goodman
There are two very important Jewish holidays coming up in September that I thought you might be interested in hearing about.
At sunset on Wednesday September 12th, Jews all over the world will begin the celebration of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year and "Birthday of the World." This is the beginning of the Days of Awe which culminate ten days later in the observance of Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement).
Like the secular New Year in January, and like any birthday, on Rosh Hashanah we reflect back on the previous year, think about how to improve ourselves and how to make the next year better, have a party, eat sweet foods, and wish for happiness in the coming year.
The difference here is the intense soul searching and penitence that begins during the Hebrew month of Elul before Rosh Hashanah and continues during the Days of Awe. According to tradition, God passes judgment over every person during this period. We ask those whom we have wronged to forgive us.
As part of the observance of both Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we go to the synagogue and pray. We are also commanded to hear the sound of the shofar.
The shofar, a wind instrument made from a ram’s horn, had been used in ancient times to signal the beginning of the month based on the new moon. In the seventh month of the Hebrew calendar (Tishri) long blasts were sounded to note a special period, a holy time.
On Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement) we have the opportunity to make amends with God, to get a clean slate so to speak. The tradition is for anyone older than thirteen and in good health to fast. This is the day Jews believe that God passes his final judgement for the year and decides who will be sealed in the Book of Life.
At Temple B’Nai Abraham in Meriden we will be celebrating Rosh Hashanah beginning Wednesday September 12th with services at 6:15 p.m. and dinner at 7:00 p.m. On Thursday and Friday services begin at 8:30 a.m., with babysitting available at 10:30 a.m.
On Friday September 21st Kol Nidre Services begin at 6:00 p.m. with Yom Kippur services beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday September 22nd.
Temple B’nai Abraham is located at 127 East Main Street in Meriden. Please call 235-2381 for more information

Attention Retirees!
It's almost that time of the year again. BACK TO SCHOOL TIME! Being retired, this probably doesn't affect you that much. But back to school time also means that the Senior Buddy Readers program is beginning tosign up volunteers for the 2007-2008 school year. "What is Senior Buddy Readers," you ask? It is an intergenerational literacy program where retirees volunteer to help first and second graders improve their reading skills. Last year, Senior Buddy Readers celebrated its fifth year, with eighty-four volunteers helping over two hundred children in five Meridenelementary schools. So if you are a retiree who has one hour a week to share with a child, don't you think it's time to volunteer as a Senior Buddy Reader? For more information or to sign up, please contact David Radcliffe, Director of Meriden Children First Initiative located at the Meriden Public Library (203) 630-3566. Or you can check out the Senior Buddy Readers link at Children First's website http://www.meridenchildrenfirst.org/. Make a difference in the life of achild. become a Senior Buddy Reader!

Rescued Mother Cat and Kitten in NEED OF A HOME!
This mother cat was left in a terrible predicament. Her owner had died and she was left behind to fend for herself. She was never spayed, which then led to having kittens. I am not sure how many kittens she may have had but by the time I found her, there was one kitten left. They are both black & white. The Mom is now spayed and has all her shots. The kitten is a male and has all his shots. I will neuter the kitten when he is old enough. I I would like to keep them together, but will adopt them out separately if I have to. The mom is a nice cat, on the quiet side and the kitten has a lot of energy, as most kittens do. PLEASE help me find them a loving home. They deserve a second chance and a good life. If interested call Kathy at 203-284-3698.
