JOIN THE GREAT BACKYARD BIRD COUNT
Count for Fun, Count for the FutureFebruary 13-16, 2009
Bird and nature fans throughout North America are invited to join tens of thousands of bird watchers for the 12th annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC), February 13-16, 2009.
A joint project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society, this free event is an opportunity for families, students, and people of all ages to discover the wonders of nature in backyards, schoolyards, and local parks, and, at the same time, make an important contribution to conservation.
“Anyone who can identify even a few species can contribute to the body of knowledge that is used to inform conservation efforts to protect birds and biodiversity,” said Audubon Education Vice-President, Judy Braus.
Volunteers take part by counting birds for at least 15 minutes on one or more days of the event and reporting their sightings online at http://www.birdcount.org/. The data help researchers understand bird population trends across the continent, information that is critical for effective conservation. In 2008, participants submitted more than 85,000 checklists, a new record.
“The GBBC has become a vital link in the arsenal of continent wide bird-monitoring projects,” said Cornell Lab of Ornithology director John Fitzpatrick. “With more than a decade of data now in hand, the GBBC has documented striking changes in late-winter bird distributions.”
Participants submit thousands of digital images for the GBBC photo contest each year. Last year’s winners have been chosen and are now posted on the web site. Participants are also invited to upload their bird videos to YouTube tagged “GBBC.” Some of them will also be featured on the GBBC web site. All participants will be entered in a drawing to win dozens of birding items, including stuffed birds, clocks, books, feeders, and more.
Businesses, schools, nature clubs, Scout troops, and other community organizations interested in the GBBC can contact the Cornell Lab of Ornithology at (800) 843-2473 (outside the U.S., call (607) 254-2473), or Audubon at citizenscience@audubon.org or (215) 355-9588, Ext 16.
The Great Backyard Bird Count is made possible, in part, by support from Wild Birds Unlimited.
The Cornell Lab of Ornithology is a nonprofit membership institution interpreting and conserving the earth’s biological diversity through research, education, and citizen science focused on birds. http://www.birds.cornell.edu/
Audubon is dedicated to protecting birds and other wildlife and the habitat that supports them. Our national network of community-based nature centers and chapters, scientific and educational programs, and advocacy on behalf of areas sustaining important bird populations, engage millions of people of all ages and backgrounds in conservation. http://www.audubon.org/

Temple Beth David Hosts Tu B’Shevat Seder
On Friday, February 6, at 7:00 p.m., Temple Beth David of Cheshire will hold a seder (festive meal) in celebration of the holiday of Tu B’Shevat.
The Tu B’Shevat seder is rooted in the Jewish mystical tradition known as Kabbalah. High in the hills of Galilee, in the town of Safed, sixteenth-century Kabbalists infused new meaning into what had been a minor agricultural holiday by holding a special seder featuring a wide variety of fruits. Kabbalah teaches that the world was created out of divine light and splendor, but some of the vessels containing the sparks of creation were shattered. People can help to restore the divine light by engaging in tikkun olam – “healing the world” – through good deeds, meditation and prayer. The fruits at the Tu B’Shevat seder symbolize this process of restoration. The Tu B’Shevat seder also expresses our reverence for the natural world. It is a time to celebrate nature and to take action to preserve and heal the environment.
All are invited join us to sample fruits, juices and wine at a beautiful and meaningful Tu B’Shevat seder. There is no charge. Temple Beth David, an inclusive Reform Jewish congregation, is located at 3 Main Street in Cheshire. For further information, please call the synagogue’s office, (203) 272-0037.

Bikers Against Animal Cruelty, gearing up for spring!
Submitted by: V.J. Peregolise, B.A.A.C. PR Representative
We here at Bikers Against Animal Cruelty are getting ready for, and looking forward to, SPRING, just like all of you I’m sure. In case you are not familiar with our group, Bikers Against Animal Cruelty (B.A.A.C.) is a nonprofit, group of motorcycle enthusiasts, with a passion for all things animal. B.A.A.C., holds several events a year, runs , parties, and even a motorcycle rodeo. All the proceeds and donations, go to caring for victims of animal abuse, and cruelty. Proceeds also help animal shelters and rescues.
As a group B.A.A.C. isn’t a political action group, we are all about helping the animals, they come first. As much as we despise anybody that would abuse, or neglect any animal, there are plenty of groups that fight the legal battles for stiffer penalties for such people.
Starting in Sept. 2007, B.A.A.C. has grown very fast. When the idea was first thrown around, it was done so with the knowledge of how generous bikers are, and how a great deal of them also loves their animals. The idea was dead on. We are based in North Haven Connecticut with members now throughout the state, and in Texas, and Florida.
With the riding season right around the corner, well lets just keep telling ourselves that, we have been busy setting our 2009 schedule. For a full lists of events, and more information on the group please check out, http://www.bikersagainstanimalcruelty.org/.
If you like to ride, have a great time with some great people, and care about animals, this group is for you. New members, and or supporters are always welcome!
