Hunter's Ambulance 21st Annual Golf Classic In Memory of William Lawton & Carol Gillooly will be held TUESDAY, September 14, 2010 at The Farms Country Club, Wallingford The Hunter’s Golf Classic is held in memory of William Lawton and Carol Gillooly, who lost their lives in the line of duty when struck by a drunk driver on September 2, 1989. This Golf Classic is the sole fundraiser for the Hunter' Scholarship Fund In Memory of William Lawton & Carol Gillooly, 501(c)3 non-profit organization. To date, over 323 recipients have benefited from monies raised through your support of the Hunter’s Ambulance Golf Classic. These individuals, from cities and towns around the State, have been able to use the funds to pursue or further their education and training in the fields of Emergency Medical Services, healthcare, and related fields in their communities. The Memorial Fund provides financial aid for tuition, books, and license fees, as well as classroom space, office space and training equipment to various groups involved with the training and education of these individuals. For the golfers , this tournament offers fine country club course conditioning (which includes golf carts, green fees, lunch, awards dinner, recognition in the program book, gift, raffles, prizes, team awards and individual awards for long drive - closest to line- closest to pin all for your $195 entrance fee). Trophies and gift certificates will be given to the top winners. Raffle tickets will give chances on winning various high-valued items. Last year's raffle prizes totaled over $13,000. CCALC/MxCC FALL, 2010 CLASS SCHEDULE It’s time to get your name on the mailing list and join the members of Castle Craig Adult Learning Center at Middlesex Community College in Meriden for the fall term. Classes are scheduled to begin on September 13th and run through November 19th. For your enjoyment we have scheduled Wonders of the Universe with Dick Boynton, a PowerPoint presentation on Vietnam with Frank Donovan, and a program on Alaska with Jack Brooks. Kevin Johnson of the Connecticut State Library will reenact “Jordan Freeman: The Fight to Set People Free”, and Nick Bellantoni, State Archeologist, will give a presentation on some of the state’s most intriguing historical mysteries. We will visit the Meriden Police S.W.A.T. Team and have a fall social at the Gouveau Winery in Wallingford. Also on the agenda are three book discussions, 3 knitting classes, four walks, how to use your digital camera, an afternoon at the opera, reading literature like a professor, drawing on the right side of the brain, and a PowerPoint presentation on G. Fox in the 1950’s. A trip to the King Tut Exhibit and the Tenement Museum in New York is planned, and by popular demand, a return trip to Delia’s Cooking Class. Orchard St. The grant was made possible through unrestricted funds, such as the George L. Fox Fund, established by bequest for broad charitable purposes. The station airs programs and announcements created by residents of Wallingford, CT. The matching grant is designed to encourage awareness and support of this local knowledge resource. The public is invited to show its support by mailing contributions to the station or registering at iGive.com/wpaa. The goal is to get 500 supporters registered at iGive.com/wpaa by October 2nd Celebrate Wallingford Day. If you or your neighbor has a pool; we will conduct swim lessons for you at your convenience. The YMCA will send a swim instructor to your home to teach your children and/or your neighbor’s children. The Community Garden has given our members an opportunity to learn important lessons on sustainability through organic raised gardening. Members work in the garden daily to learn responsibilities that need to fulfilled to harvest a plentiful crop. They also visit My City Kitchen twice a week to learn how to prepare vegetables harvested from the garden in nutritionally based meals. Kashia Cave President of My City Kitchen has given members of the Beat the Street Community Centers Community Garden program an opportunity to bring Healthy cooking lessons home to their families. This effort supported by The City of Meriden ,Meriden Housing Authority, Meriden /Wallingford United Way, Hampton Inn , TD Bank, Country Flower Farms, Kogut's Nursery, Shiner Signs Inc, Meriden Rotary Club, Record-Journal, UCONN Master Gardeners, will give lessons to our members that will be shared with generations to come. Meriden's Back to School Expo This years Meriden's Back to School Expo is coming back to downtown Meriden! The Meriden Back to School Expo Committee is planning on giving out over 1300 book bags filled with school supplies to the first Meriden children that participate in this year’s expo. There will be over 20 different Municipal departments, agencies, non-profit organizations and businesses at the expo to share information with parents and children. Meriden's new school superintendent Mr. Mark Benigni will be the keynote speaker. So put August 24th on your calendar at the Meriden Hub Site, begins at 10 am thru 1 pm. Brian David Ash Memorial Annual Fundraising Event It’s been twenty-four years that The Brian David Ash Fire Memorial Fire Prevention Fund has been running its annual fundraiser for fire safety in Brian Ash’s memory. We will be doing it again this year on September 10th, 11th, and 12th at Stop and Shop on East Main Street in Meriden. So what’s it all about? It starts with a novel idea, “Working Smoke Detectors Save Lives”. We have heard this since we were kids, but people don’t believe it. There are actually homes that don’t have them, and many others that have ones that won’t work. If you’re awake, you’ll smell smoke, but not when you’re sleeping. When you sleep, you lose your sense of smell first, and it’s the last sense to come back when you awakened. It is recommended that you change the battery in a smoke detector once a year. It is also suggested that you change the smoke detector every ten years. It is also advisable to test the smoke detector regularly. NEVER move a smoke detector battery to another device. Your life is worth more than any battery. Fire drills are common in school, but when did you have one at home? More than likely, you never did. What is your plan of escape? What would you do in a fire? These are the facts that The Brian David Ash Fire Memorial Fire Prevention Fund is trying to teach. The funds we raise are used to provide educational materials that are distributed by the fire department. These include booklets, videos, handouts, and specialty items that carry our life saving message, “Working Smoke Detectors Save Lives”. We also provide the Meriden children with their fire hats during fire prevention week and the smoke detector batteries the fire department hands out to students and families. Our hot dog sale at Stop and Shop is our primary fundraiser and all proceeds go to the fund. Please come by and visit us, and don’t forget your hot dog, soda and chips. CT Titans Softball Tryouts The CT Titans a premier girls fast pitch softball organization based in central Connecticut has had a very successful summer season and we are looking for girls interested in joining our teams. We would like to welcome you to our tryouts for the 2010/11 season for the following teams: 10u, 12u, 14u, 16u, 18u and 23u. The dates, times and places are as follows: Saturday, August 14th and Sunday, August 15th for 10u from 9 am to 10:30 am; 12u and 14u players from 11 am to 12:30 pm; and 16u, 18u and 23u players from 1 pm to 3:30 pm at Main Street School (77 Main Street, Terryville off route 6 near the route 6/72 intersection). If the weather is bad on any of these dates, we will move tryouts at our indoor training facility located at 13 Agney Avenue, Terryville, CT (off route 6, behind the volunteer Ambulance building). This is a great opportunity to play competitive softball against some of the finest teams in the area during the summer season. Players train during the winter at our 5,000 square foot indoor facility and work one-on-one with a highly trained staff - including current and ex-college coaches and athletes, and our personal trainer. Our teams play in multiple “national and/or regional" tournaments each summer sanctioned by PONY, ASA and NSA. Our older teams also play in college showcases throughout the year. The Arc assists individuals with exploring options for gainful employment, community participation, recreation, self advocacy, along with gaining skills to plan your life’s direction. Interfaith Volunteer Care Givers Volunteers are needed to visit frail, elderly people, to shop with or for an elder, to drive an elder to and from their medical appointment, and to provide respite care to family members caring for a loved one who needs constant care. All that is required is a warm, loving heart and one or two hours of your time each week. A two hour training session will provide you with information and basic skills to make a difference in someone’s life.
