Wallingford Community Day Care Hosts Mayor, Cat in the Hat, Thing 1 & Thing 2 and Viola Swamp!
Dressed in a shirt, tie and overcoat, Mayor William Dickinson walked into a preschool classroom at Wallingford Community Day Care and put on a hat. But it wasn’t just any hat – it was a red- and white-striped Dr. Seuss hat. And this was no ordinary day – this was “Read Across America Day.”
On March 2, with “Green Eggs and Ham” in hand, the mayor began reading the beloved story to the delight of the many children who soon circled around him to listen to his animated version of the story – complete with sound effects and acting out some scenes.
“I do not like green eggs and ham! I do not like them, Sam-I-Am,” said the mayor.
Jessica Ivan, who is an assistant with the four-year-old children at Wallingford Community Day Care, along with kindergarten teacher Tammy Smith, spearheaded the “Raising Readers Club.” The club typically meets on Wednesday nights, but instead of a club meeting, Ivan read “Yurtle the Turtle” and built a tower of blocks that alternated with paper Yurtles. The tower grew taller and taller…until Yurtle sneezed and the tower fell to the ground, causing the children to squeal with delight.
In other classrooms, children listened to Dale Sheehan, who is part of the infant/toddler program at Wallingford Community Daycare and dressed as both “Thing 1 AND Thing 2” read “Hop on Pop; kindergarten teacher Tammy Smith read “Miss Nelson is Missing” (dressed as Viola Swamp); and families – be it moms, dads, siblings, grandparents, stepparents, aunts, uncles or friends – watch skits performed by the school-age children and show their clay-figure interpretations of Dr. Seuss’s works.
“They studied Dr. Seuss all week [during school vacation],” said Director Kathy Queen.
And it wasn’t just the school-age children that were working hard during vacation week. The three-year-olds worked on phonemic awareness – learning how important one’s mouth is to speaking and worked it into Dr. Seuss and the importance rhyming has on language development.
The first three years of life is the most effective time to teach pre-literacy skills. The development of oral language is the foundation of reading and writing. Without a strong foundation, children can fall behind as academic material becomes more complex. Early literacy is not about 3- and 4-year-olds reading proficiently. That's not developmentally-appropriate It's learning to enjoy listening to someone read, establishing a love of reading and gaining knowledge, understanding how words work on a page, that letters make up words, how to look through a book, how to hold a book. They see that it's fun to read.
Queen saw March 2 as an important way to include families into the overall life success of the children at her center.
“If we’re looking to close the achievement gap and we want kids to be ready and be the best, most literate kids out there, then it’s not just about school readiness,” said Queen. “It’s about the family, nutrition and fun, because kids aren’t islands. They live in a family and family is key – no matter what that family is.”
Jacob: Six-year-old Jacob proudly displays his clay rendering of a Dr. Seuss classic.
Jessica and Yurtle the Turtle 1: Jessica Ivan, assistant teacher in the four-year-old classroom, reads an interactive version of "Yurtle the Turtle" with Mirna 8 and Manda, 4-and-a-half, listening intently. Watch out when Yurtle sneezes!
Mallory and Natalia: Seven-year-old Mallory reads "Hop on Pop" to 7-year-old Natalia.
Mayor Reading 4: Mayor William Dickinson gets animated as he reads "Green Eggs and Ham."
Mayor’s Corner - Wallingford
Dear Friends:
This year Earth Day was marked on the calendar as April 22nd; however, the Town of Wallingford is celebrating throughout the month of April with a variety of events.
The Wallingford Recycling Committee held its first-ever Environmental Film Series. Three films were shown at the Wallingford Public Library Community Room from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Discussion will follow each film. On April 4th Flow, for the Love of Water, Irene Salina’s award-winning documentary was shown; on April 13th Energy Crossroads, an award-winning documentary regarding problems associated with our energy consumption was aired, and on April 25th The 11th Hour was featured. The film explores how we’ve arrived at this moment – how we live, how we impact the earth’s ecosystems, and what we can do to change our course.
The Town kicked off its new Electronic Recycling Program on April 9th. Residents may now bring used household electronics to the Recycling Center on John Street on the 2nd Saturday of each month. The Center is open on those days from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you have any questions regarding this program, please call Program Planning at 203-294-2061.
In addition, the Recycling Committee is sponsored a recycling art contest for Wallingford students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Entries were either imaginative sculptures or useful items made from recycled materials. Judging was held on April 21 with winners to be announced in the next issue..
On Saturday, April 30th Wallingford celebrated CLEAN a ROAD Day. Volunteers cleaned “needy” roads and stopped by Town Hall. for bags, gloves and/or vests. It was a great time to remove litter from our roads and grounds!
Through everyone’s efforts at home, work and in our community, we can reduce negative environmental impacts and improve our Earth.
Sincerely,
William W. Dickinson, Jr. - Mayor

On our Schools…
By Mark D. Benigni, Ed.D.
Superintendent - Meriden Public Schools
Dear Friends,
As we see softballs and baseballs in the air, we know spring has finally arrived. While we are now in the final quarter of our school year, it is important that our students continue to work hard and finish the school year strong.
On April 14th, Donna Mik and Lysette Torres were honored by the Women and Families Center with 2011 Women in Leadership Awards. Donna was honored with the "Education Award" for her exceptional leadership of Platt High School. Lysette, Assistant Principal at Lincoln Middle School, was honored with a "Role Model Award" for all she has done to nurture and guide young men and women. The staff, students and families of the Meriden Public Schools are all very proud of Donna and Lysette. Congratulations on your well-deserved honors.
Also on Thursday, April 14th, a Volunteer Recognition Dinner was held at the Platt High School cafeteria. This was a chance for our school system to say "Thank You" to the hundreds of volunteers who help our schools and children. These volunteers provide thousands of hours of their time and save our school system a substantial amount of money. A special thank you to all the volunteers and the following businesses that supported the event: Thurston Foods of Wallingford, Barkers Specialty of Cheshire, M&R Frosted Foods of West Haven, Wades' Dairy of Bridgeport, and Mansfield Paper of West Springfield, MA
I would also like to congratulate Gary Maratea, Washington Middle School teacher, and Platt High School on receiving competitive grants to help improve student learning. Mr. Maratea received $2,195 from 3M for a "Beyond Questions" clicker response system that can be incorporated with a SMART Board. Platt High School received $1,989 from the Liberty Bank Foundation to purchase high-interest paperbacks to supplement the independent reading component of the READ 180 program. Thanks to 3M and Liberty Bank for their generous donations and for helping us provide the support and enrichment that our students need to be most successful.
With the winter weather behind us, our last day of school is currently scheduled for June 20th. Thank you for all your support and enjoy the spring weather!
All the Best,
Mark D. Benigni, Ed.D.
